Savannah

Savannah.

Day 32.

Today we were heading down to savannah, we planned this trip for a relaxing break on the beach, see when Carly said she wanted to go to savannah I thought some reason she meant for the beach. I don’t know what put the beach into my head because if you know savannah its know for it beautiful architecture and its history, that’s what Carly wanted to see not the beach.

After spending a painful hour at the information center where I got no information, the old ladies looked like wax statues and were as cold as them as well. No help was given, so we had to organize our accommodation without internet or even knowing the area because they couldn’t tell us a place to get internet or cheap accommodation. I remember looking at a camping ground on Tybee Island, called River Inn camp ground.

I called them and they had no camping sites left but what they did have were sites that where first in best dressed. The only way for us to get on the Island were a shuttle bus it came to times a day 10am and 5pm for $3, it was perfect it was 4pm so not long to wait to get down there.

Well we made our way to Tybee Island, we were going to camp for our first time in USA.

On arrival we saw a older couple next to us and one tent a couple of sites down, so not a lot of people in this part but the rest was full. Set up our tent and everything, it was about 6 and we hadn’t ate anything for that day yet, so got talking to the couple next to us, they were really nice there names were Mary and Marty they were from Canada. Mary and marty had an amazingly cool camper van exactly like the one we wanted, they were driving around just enjoying there time off, and getting used to it.

They gave us some ideas for dinner, then we set out to get some tucker.

We walked the long way around so we could get a grasp for what was around, we ended up on the beach at a bar and grill, it was cool, everyone knew each other beach shack vibe going on and music gave it a great environment.

Dinner was good and cheap so we had a good night, after dinner we went back to our tent, Marty and Mary, informed us about a massive storm coming our way they said it was going to hit at 5am. We had seen it on the news in the bar, the storm stretched from New Orleans all the was up to Tennessee, so it was huge, tornado in Tennessee as well, we didn’t know it was going to hit us until Mary and Marty told us.

Later that night we sat around a fire chatting about cultural differences from America to our countries and everyday thing, really fun Mary and Marty were really cool and down to earth people, I really enjoyed the night.

Day 33.

Today was our day to relax.

Bang on 5am the storm rolled in, it was loud and heavy, the lightning and thunder seemed not to stop, continuing on and on. When we woke in the morning about an hour after the storm had passed it was clearing up and by the time another hour had passed it was sunny again and hot.

Our sleep was terrible, because we hadn’t got a car we had forgot to get items we needed, like something to sleep on or even a blanket, lucky Mary and Marty had given us a blanket the night before. If they hadn’t given us it we would have froze.

We walked to the fort on Tybee Island, explored other parts of the Island, and just chilled.

Day 35.

Mary and Marty drove Carly and I back in to savannah, after that we sat in a part of information center building, its not actually the information center but its at the back, its called the Boiler room, they had free internet and a socket to plug my laptop in. we sat there for around maybe three hours, they were really nice and we didn’t even have to buy anything to stay, though we got some hot chips and gave them some money for letting us stay.

We booked a hotel called Master Inn, cheap and close to the city.

While on the bus out to the Inn we drove through areas that were rough, Carly and I were like don’t stop here please, it didn’t it stopped in a nicer area with everything we needed within walking distance.

We decided to just pack it in for the day, after all we haven’t had a good sleep in 3 days, so we just sat on the bed and watched TV, a good change from everything else we have been doin

Day 36.

Sick, Sleeping bag and past time memories

Today started out normal as most, we woke prepared for the day to come, today we would explore the beautiful city of Savannah.

We set out by starting by the bay, we came across a boat built to be a replica old ship. The ship had been equip with new and modern fitting in the control room, the rest of the ship I would say have to be as close to what you could imagine a pirate ship crossed between luxury cruise ship could be. All in all this ship opens your mind to fantasy of the past years on the high sea, I don’t know maybe just the pirate in me trying to escape. The ship was beautiful and the owners did a great job by opening it to the public with free admission, allowing you to roam the better part of the ship, a donation at the end just for allowing you aboard.

Once we hit dry land again we followed the bay and trekked down a line of amazing buildings, they give you very clear image of how buildings worked and you can even paint a picture of how at that time life went about. Most of the buildings intact from the youthful days, the road the lay beside they bay still intact giving you a greater detail to really picture how once the past lives of America. Walking down the street great big roads the would have been the paths taken off the main road, still in same structure and the detail and the time it would have taken to make these roads and allies you could only imagine.

After my bay side walk we got hungry so headed up to outback steak house for some lunch, I don’t know why they are called a stack house as they only had two different cuts to chooses from. With the menu having all the slogans you could pock a stick at I finally chose, I didn’t really think many of the dishes really an Australian meal but more of an American take, all well.

After lunch I just felt extremely sick and wondered for about an hour, we couldn’t really take must in because I would walk steps and have cramps and they were the most painful I have had before so we sat a lot. After the felling passed I still wasn’t 100% so we were limited as I didn’t want to waste a day but couldn’t risk wondering off to far., so we got on a free shuttle bus that drove you around some parts of Savannah. The shuttle allowed you to picture the times and experience the house with all differing in structure and how it fitted into the picture of Savannah.

After that we decided to head out to Savannah Mall, we needed a sleeping bag after our last camping experience being so excruciating uncomfortable, the is discomfort of sleeping on rocks and using a beach rug as a doona it just is a bit to raw for what I’m looking for. The bus ride was very very long, we were told 25 mins to get there and it took more then an hour, it is because the bus stopped at every stop, if you every ride the bus and consciously see the bus stopping at every stop it bugs you.

We arrived at this mall, it was dead I had to ask if it was closing because there was not one person around and some shops had shut, it was the first time since I had been here that I had seen something so dead.

After the mall we just went home to prepare for our bus ride to Myrtle Beach.

Savannah is a beautiful city, you need to see this city to experience the past life. If you do get a chance to get here put the time aside and explore Savannahs history, as it is rich in history and I’m sure will prove great stories. Its sad we didn’t get to do so, if we get the chance we might make it back here.
